Are You Clubbing Tonight? See The 10 Hangover Remedies You Need To Know

After a night of drinking and clubbing with your friends, you wake up with a stomachache, a headache, you feel nauseous and you are finding it hard to get out of bed. You have a hangover.

No one can really say what causes a hangover. My uncle will say shi**y alcohol. Some theories say that alcohol disrupts biological rhythms; others that alcohol withdrawal is the culprit. One thing I can say is alcohol is the reason you feeling that way.

A headache is most likely caused by the dehydration that occurs when you take alcohol (alcohol is diuretic) and your body’s adjustment to your dropping blood alcohol levels after you’ve stopped drinking.

If you don’t want to be hung-over, stay away from alcohol, or drink in moderation. If not, you’ll have to deal with the symptoms for about 8-24 hours (and if you are like my friend Oliver, about 36 hours). But, it is often easy to overindulge and that can lead to you feeling queasy the morning after.

There is no one solution to fix the problem, and traditional hangover remedies are sometimes ineffective, and some of them may actually make you feel worse. But there are simple natural ways to avoid the pain or tackle the general malaise the day after; you just have to find the one that works for you.

1. Water

Since alcohol is diuretic, you are most likely going to get dehydrated when you take a lot of alcohol. You need H2O to stay hydrated. It’s safe you drink a glass of water after every bottle of beer, or glass of wine. Before going to bed, make sure you drink about 3 glasses of water, this will help you replace lost fluids. Just be careful and not drink too much water, unless you’ll feel worse.

2. More liquids

You can also alternate between sports drinks or coconut water. This will also help you replace the lost fluids in your body. The reason you need this is because water is not enough you need to drink electrolyte-rich fluids to restore the salt and potassium you’ve lost.

3. Consume sugar while drinking

It is important to eat sugar while you are drinking, not before. Research has shown that fructose may speed up alcohol metabolism, so you can try taking something sugar in between alcohol drinks.

4. Sleep

Lack of sleep makes a hangover worse. One thing is alcohol will put you to bed quickly, but the withdrawal your body will start to feel will jolt you awake. Take a long nap the day after; this will help the body to repair itself.

5. Eat breakfast

This sounds impossible. You are sure to feel really sick the morning after and may lack the appetite to eat. This will help you replenish your dehydrated system. Eat foods that are easy to digest like cereal, etc.

6. Toast or crackers

Toast and crackers are really good when you can’t keep anything down. Since you have to eat, toast and crackers are a good option to help with your uneasy stomach.

7. Coffee

This is a personal preference. Coffee can both cure and cause a migraine; you have to be very careful with this option.

8. Pain medications

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain relievers can provide some relief for the hangover. Try not to overdose on this, as it can cause damage to the liver.

9. Exercise

Exercise can help you feel better, that’s if you can manage it. A gentle workout advised. Try to sweat the alcohol in your body out. Make sure you have your water bottle in hand so as not to get more dehydrated.

10. Prevention

This is my favourite and the best cure. We all have to learn to drink responsibly. It takes the body at least an hour to metabolize each bear wine or shot. Just make sure you eat before you drink, don’t drink fast and also drink responsibly.
